ISLA DE LOBOS está situada a 18 Km de las costas del pequeño pueblo de Tamiahua, Pese a haber albergado instalaciones para facilitar la explotación petrolera de la zona desde la década de los sesenta, recientemente fue retirada la infraestructura, las actividades abandonadas y declarada ÁREA NATURAL PROTEGIDA en 2009.

El nombramiento dio lugar a que los arrecifes y la fauna marina que del área se desarrollase sin presiones. Hoy en día, los buceos alrededor de la isla están se realizan en escenarios que combinan hermosos jardines de corales duros y blandos, con restos de naufragios. Los encuentros con diversas especies de tortugas, morenas, pulpos e infinidad de peces son la norma.

A 40 min de navegación se encuentra también la PLATAFORMA TIBURÓN, una enorme estructura petrolera de bombeo automático cuya base llega a los 60 m. En este arrecife artificial la visibilidad suele muy buena, lo que permite ver la vida marina de gran tamaño que la usa como refugio: cardúmenes de barracudas, jureles, atunes y sábalos son típicos en los buceos, además de que puede admirarse todo el coral que se ha adherido a la plataforma, y la inmensidad del mar que la rodea.

Isla de Lobos is located 18 km off the coast of the small town of Tamiahua, Veracruz.  it housed facilities for oil exploration in the area since the 1960s, the infrastructure was recently removed, the activities abandoned, and the island declared a Protected Natural Area in 2009. This designation allowed the reefs and marine life in the area to develop without pressure. Today, diving around the island takes place in settings that combine beautiful gardens of hard and soft corals with shipwrecks. Encounters with various species of turtles, moray eels, octopuses, and countless fish are commonplace. A 40-minute boat ride away is also the Tiburón Platform, a massive automated oil pumping structure whose base reaches 60 meters. Visibility is usually very good on this artificial reef, allowing you to see the large marine life that uses it as a refuge: schools of barracuda, jacks, tuna and tarpon are typical on dives, in addition to admiring all the coral that has attached to the platform, and the immensity of the sea that surrounds it.
